Planning A Trip To The Sunshine Coast Hinterland

visit the hinterland

Depending on how long you are staying with us at Nautilus Mooloolaba, you might like to plan a trip to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Up in the nearby Blackall Range, you can find many quaint small towns with lots of great opportunities for sightseeing, snapping a selfie or grabbing a bite to eat.

Some of the better-known towns to visit are Maleny, Montville Mapleton and Kenilworth. Here are some of our favourite attractions in the hinterland. We hope you get to visit some of them while you are here.

The picturesque town of Montville sits on the edge of the range, overlooking the coast. The views are fantastic. In town, there is a bit of an alpine feel and just walking the street and visiting some of the stores is well worth the visit.

Montville

Most famous in town are The Clock Shoppe and the Chocolate Country Store. Most famous perhaps is the fudge at Fudgyboombahs.

Kondalilla National Park

The lovely Kondalilla National Park is also situated close to Montville. There are many rainforest trails that lead to the highlight, which is a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole. The park can get quite busy in the warmer months after there has been some rain.

Maple St Maleny

Maple Street is the main road through Maleny. This busy hinterland town attracts tourist by the droves. Most people come here just to wander the street, looking for a bargain or a bite to eat.

There is a great co-op for local organic produce. Maleny Food Co is just nearby with its award-winning ice cream. Maleny Laneway is one of the better spots for international food stalls on the coast. Brouhaha is just around the corner too, with craft beer in a funky pub setting.

Maleny is known as a bit of a hippy town. There are lots of op shops and great clothing and art stores on both sides of the street.

Nearby is the Maleny Dairy, The Botanical Gardens with Bird World included and May Cairncross Scenic Reserve for the best view of the Glasshouse Mountains.

Kenilworth

While Kenilworth is not strictly a hinterland town, as it is behind the range, many people choose to come back to the coast through Kenilworth. It is another picturesque little country town with lots of street appeal.

The Kenilworth Dairy is at the centre of town. They sell everything cheesy, with a great old school playground across the road. Kenilworth is also home to the Kenilworth Bakery, which is famous for its 1 kilo donut challenge among other things. You don’t have to go all the way there though, as they have just now opened an outlet right here at the Mooloolaba Wharf! Just another benefit of staying at our holiday apartments in Mooloolaba!

Everyone loves the Hinterland, and we are so lucky to have such a beautiful place right here in our own backyard. It is an easy day trip from the coast. If you want any information or advice about visiting the Hinterland, just let us know.
